Deck Construction on Lake Muskoka

Lake Muskoka is the largest of the three big Muskoka lakes, stretching over 100 kilometres of shoreline from Gravenhurst at its southern end to Bracebridge in the north. The lake is dotted with islands, bays, and points, each with its own character and building conditions. We build decks, docks, and outdoor structures on all shores of Lake Muskoka.

Lake Muskoka's Geography

Lake Muskoka is big enough to feel like open water in some stretches. The southern basin around Gravenhurst is wide and exposed, with significant fetch that can produce waves capable of damaging an undersized dock. The northern arms near Bracebridge are more sheltered, with narrower channels and more protected bays.

The shoreline varies from sandy beaches in a few spots to the more typical Muskoka landscape of exposed granite, mixed forest, and steep slopes to the water. Many of the lake's islands have been cottaged for generations, and the older structures on them often need updating, replacement, or modernization.

Water Level Management

Lake Muskoka's water level is controlled by the dam system at Bala, where the Muskoka River exits the lake and flows toward the Moon River. Water levels can vary by 60 centimetres or more between spring high water and late summer low water. This fluctuation is a major factor in dock design, and every dock we build on Lake Muskoka accounts for the full range.

Three Municipalities, One Lake

Lake Muskoka is bordered by three different municipalities, each with its own building department and development policies:

  • Town of Gravenhurst (south shore, Gravenhurst Bay) on Sharpe Street
  • Town of Bracebridge (north shore, Muskoka River outlet) on Manitoba Street
  • Township of Muskoka Lakes (west shore, connecting channels) on Bailey Street in Port Carling

We know which building department handles your property and submit permits to the correct authority. Each has slightly different processes and timelines.

Common Questions in Lake Muskoka

Which municipalities border Lake Muskoka?

Lake Muskoka touches three municipalities: the Town of Gravenhurst at the south, the Town of Bracebridge at the north, and the Township of Muskoka Lakes to the west. Which building department handles your permit depends on which shore your property sits on. We know the boundaries and submit to the correct authority.

What dock type works best on Lake Muskoka?

Lake Muskoka is large and can produce serious wave action, especially on the open southern stretches. Crib docks are the most common choice for exposed shorelines because of their weight and stability. Steel pipe docks work well in sheltered bays and coves. We recommend the right system based on your specific shoreline exposure and water depth.

How do water level changes on Lake Muskoka affect my dock?

Lake Muskoka water levels are managed by the Bala dam system and can fluctuate significantly between spring high water and late summer low water. Your dock design needs to account for this range. Steel pipe docks with adjustable heights and floating docks handle fluctuations best. Crib docks are designed with the expected range in mind during construction.
